BREAKING: Yoruba elder statesman, Adebanjo passes away at 96

Renowned nationalist and respected elder statesman, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, has died at the age of 96.

He passed away peacefully at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State, on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025.

His family confirmed his passing in an official statement released on Friday, which read, “He peacefully departed this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki home in Lagos at the age of 96.”

Chief Adebanjo, a seasoned lawyer and former organising secretary of the Action Group, was also the national leader of Afenifere, a prominent Yoruba socio-political group. He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Honoring his legacy, the family stated, “He was a tireless advocate for truth, justice, and the advancement of Nigeria. His dedication to these ideals remained steadfast until his final moments.”

Plans are currently being discussed with his associates and key stakeholders to organize a befitting farewell. The details of his funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

Condolence registers have been opened at his Lekki residence and his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The statement was signed on behalf of the family by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo.
