In order to make access to treatments easy for breast cancer patients, the wife of Ondo State Governor and founder of Breast Cancer Association Of Nigeria (BRECAN),Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu has presented breast cancer diagnosis equipment to Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owo.
Appreciating FMC management for its cooperation, Mrs Akeredolu said that she was happy because most cancer patients who ought to have visited hospital for the treatment but could not due to financial constrains can now do so with the provision of the equipment.
“BRECAN is non Governmental Organization and non partisan. All we do is to raise awareness and be sure that no woman die needlessly.
“Most breast cancer patients do not have money the first time they were diagnosed with the disease, this make them to patronize churches or herbalists. This is the problem we face when dealing with women who don’t have money to access health care. This is why we put our heads together to make the equipments for cancer diagnosis available . It is not enough to raise awareness without thinking of how to treat patients which was the reason for crowd funding where breast cancer patients are receiving treatment.
“We have been lucky to have International Organizations collaborating with us, and we hope that a lot more will come our way. I am also glad for the support we are getting from FMC regarding the treatment of breast cancer patients.
Some people wonder why FMC that is a federal health institution, but I told them that it is the people of Ondo State who patronise the hospital, hence the need to give them the needed support.
While thanking the First Lady for her efforts at providing equipment for cancer diagnosis for the hospital, Head of Department (HOD) Pathology, Dr Femi Ariyibi stated that the equipment will help in the management of cancer and will also aid the treatment of the disease.
