As residents of Akure, the Ondo State capital are still smarting from the violent robbery which claimed the life of the Bursar of Anglican Communion, Mr Gabriel Abiodun, pressures are being mounted by the people on the police to fish out the killers.
Prominent people, who spoke with The Hope Metro expressed disgust over the manner which the perpetrators escaped in the heart of the metropolis in broad day light.
Those interviewed, who preferred to keep their identities secret said the lax manner with which the robbery gang executed the job calls for a probe into the response mechanism of the police.
A mechanic whose shop is not far from the robbery incident said the inability of detectives to make arrest despite being availed with the get away robbery vehicle showed the porosity of security in the state.
“How were they able to escape in the broad daylight even when an eyewitness was able to give the colour of the Toyota Corolla with which the suspected robbers operated?
“This clearly showed that our security system is porous and ineffective in the state. If robbers can rob by 9.45am and go unhurt in the heart of the town, it raises many questions.
“We cannot continue to rely on assurances from the Police after such dastardly incident that claimed the life of an innocent man. We have been witnessing relative peace and we have a lot of confidence in the present leadership of the police in the state, but there is a need for them to re-strategise their operational system to prevent such occurrence in future.
“We had expected that the police would give them a hot chase by using their ‘walkie-talkie’ to radio every division and every stop and search points across the state which would have led to the arrest of the evil doers”, they said.
The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu has assured that the perpetrators of the gruesome act would soon be nabbed and brought to book.
The IGP, who was represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Zone 11 Oshogbo, Mr Leye Oyebade, gave the assurance when he led an entourage on a condolence visit to the Bishop of Akure Anglican Diocese, Rt Rev Simeon Borokini over the death of the Church’s Bursar.
While commiserating with the state, the Akure Anglican Diocese and family members of the deceased, he assured that the suspected robbers would soon be arrested and made to face judgment.
The Anglican Bishop, while receiving the AIG and his entourage, commended IGP Adamu for identifying and sharing in the grief of the Church and family of the deceased, urged the police to ensure that killers of their Burser are arrested.
The AIG who also visited the deceased’s residence, condoled with them and assured that the police will do everything possible to unmasked the killers, just as he called on the general public to always give useful information that would help solve crime related issues happening in the state.
He added that the job of effective crime prevention, detection and control should not be left in the hands of the police alone and suggested community policing which he described as the best method of tackling crime and criminality in the society.
