Buhari, Save Nigeria Now

WHEN President Muhammadu Buhari, PMB, became Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces in 1984, his government came down heavily on the political class and the civil society with draconian laws and so much heavy handedness. Politicians outside his ethno- religious zone were mercilessly dealt with, even when by his regime’s standards they should have been discharged. Efforts of the General to participate in the democratic process were thereafter ignored in southern Nigeria.
BUT some time later, the governments of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP)were unbecoming. Corruption was the order of the day, and a good number of the electorate believed there should be a change. Many started to work for him. He was presented as a leader who could curb the excesses of politicians and who would do wonders under a democratic civil rule. The people started to embrace him and canvassed that the man- of- zero tolerance for corruption would make a world of difference. Allegations of Islamic fundamentalism and nepotism were debunked.
THE coast got cleared, for PMB, electioneering was encouraging. He was on good ground. PMB trounced his opponent, who disappeared from the public glare.
FULANI leaders became more visible on farmland and highways, Farmers who protested the plundering of their farms were promptly amputated or shot dead. Before long, herders started drafting their war to the expressways to disrupt traffic and take hostages. Communities were violated and plundered, while law enforcement agents looked away. Stories of armed bandits, who are suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, filled the pages of newspapers and the airwaves.
FROM Katsina to Kaduna, Benue to Plateau, and even Zamfara States, the list is endless. More than 300 school boys were abducted in Katsina State in December 2020 in Kaduna State, between 2019 and 2021 witnessed no fewer than over hundred deaths.
OTHER states like Zamfara, Katsina and even Ondo and Oyo down south have had their own painful share of the evils perpetrated by these individuals. Still fresh in the memory is the case of Mrs. Olakunori, daughter of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, who was murdered by suspected Fulani herdsmen in 2018 along Ore road.
ACCORDING to an estimate by a Brussels-based crisis group, the bandits have killed about 8,000 people and forced more than 200,000 to flee their homes since 2011. We of The Hope are surprised at the new outlook of government and the security situation of the land under a man touted to be fair, honest and capable of good leadership.
UNFORTUNATELY, Fulani-educated political elites continue to beat the drum of war which they assume to have won before declaration, or how else do we account for shameless utterances of nabobs of negativism who embolden nomads carrying about AK-47 because they are constitutional guaranted freedom of movement?
WHILE they were questioning authority of South West Nigeria to contain banditry, by tackling criminality, is it deliberate they are making cattle rusting in Northwest Nigeria their focus?
WE of The Hope subscribe to a social system in which there is security of life and property, where the state is run by personnel who believe that they must provide a conducive atmosphere for everyone to pursue their socio economic agenda without any encumbrance.
WE believe that children-male and female have a right to formal education to acquire necessary skills to make a life of dignity in adulthood.
NO threats or war drumming would make us change our country in this direction. South West Governors would not act contrary to our explanations hence we stand by them .
