Buhari should reverse fuel pump price

By Ayodele Fagbohun

“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people mourn” Proverbs 29-2.
I will avoid all the sweet preliminaries and pleasantries concomitant with letter writing either formal or informal and go straight to the object of my message.
I earnestly and humbly plead with Your Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari at his austere and most precious time when money is hard to come by to drop the high fuel pump price N43.80k.
Mr. President in another proclamation should graciously with expeditious alacrity revert to the old rate N123 in conformity to the canon and spirit of the All Progressives Congress on which political platform you were massively elected as two term president of this vast republic, the giant of Africa, Nigeria full of incredible latent rich potential.
“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice, but when the wicked are in power so to say, the people mourn,”goes the book of Proverbs chapter 19:2
The latter part of this biblical wise crack aptly described the sad narrative and pitiable scenario played out in the immediate past federal government controlled by the People’s Democratic Party.
The people especially the down trodden were heavily traumatized by poverty, hunger and unemployment. For instance, in the case of access to petroleum products which should be cheaper on the ground of comparative advantage for Nigeria is the sixth world producer of crude oil. It is sad, unfortunate and totally unthinkable that, your Excellency that we are literally and figuratively sitting on the ocean, yet we are washing our hands with spittle.
To the people’s consternation, this ugly spectacle should not longer be the lots of the people in an administration controlled by APC impinged on ideological beliefs and practice of giving succour and relief to the people at the receiving ends.
No sooner the pump price was lowered to the rock bottom price of N123.04 when the price of oil plummeted in the international market than the people rejoiced and were partially relieved of the yoke of unpleasant hike in petroleum products that should normally be easily accessed without tears by all and sundry.
The ordinary people are nonplussed at the inconsistent flip of lap policies of government through the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA).
When all things being equal, Your Excellency never again should our economy be determined and dictated at the whions and caprices of the foreign capitals in league with and caprices of the foreign capitals in league with native monopolists oligopolies in various nomenclatures dubiously called investors. They overrun the essence and fundamentals of our economy and by so doing impoverish the people.
Which is why, Your Excellency, the fear expressed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the true vanguard of workers’ right and struggle for decent living wage and high standard of living should be dispassionately looked into, in the unexpected hike of petroleum products by the PPPRA.
This, no doubt is causing a cold ward amongst the various players in the distribution chain, which may be a bad omen in the oil industry.
The earlier and the promptness of Mr. President to resolve the logjam or crisis compounded by corruption, avarice and the excruciating capitalist mode of administration over the years, the better for the material well being and welfare of the citizenry.
In a thought provoking book, “The power of character in leadership” authored by the late world renown black American evangelist, priest and prolific writer, Dr. Myles Munroe, he said, the most important quality a true leader should and must possess is moral force of noble and stable character.
Without nay resemblance of deification as I am strongly averse to the incursion of Military rule and indeed influx of retired Armed Forces generals into partisan politics in this country.
For they have done more harm than good to the corporate existence and political evolution of Nigeria.
However, I make bold to say that Your Excellency in spite of your shortcomings due to your military constituency and secondly your epitome of this rare virtue of noble and stable character combined with integrity as a serving military administrator and former Head of State.
You are unassuming, not having egregious lust for wealth, material mundane acquisition like your compeers in the army. A zero tolerance for corruption even some are allegedly stealing under your watch as financial sleaze and corruption is almost a way of life in Nigeria. This, must however be tackled headlong with extra judicial process, not with the current application by kid glove Your Excellency is half heartedly resorting to.
As a “cow boy” Fulani born in the ancient and famous town, Daura now in Katsina state that belonged initially to the dreg of the society tagged the “talakawa” By the dint of hardwork, industry and resilience and government warm policy on education in the north, you showed as a radiant star amongst the galaxies.
You excelled and reached the pinnacle in your chosen career.
His Excellency, I must mention, your personal intrinsic attribute as charismatic, highly disciplined and incorruptible leadership confer on you a sort of deification, fervid acceptance to cult personality amongst the general mill-of-people across the northern part of the country.
However, Mr. President, Mohammadu Buhari could not be crucified for being a Fulani of Nigerian extraction. That is the act of God.
As a “born again” democrat fop progressive bent as His Excellency has publicly confessed. Mr. President must learn fast and know the rope, what entails in becoming a serving progressive leader in a vast multi religious ethnic and other disparate diversities like Nigeria.
To worsen the scenario, Nigeria is unfortunately suffering from the wanton pillage and corruption by coterie of irresponsible, profligate and debauched political leadership both in the military and civilian entrenched over the years.
His Excellency must come in the nick of time to arrest the deplorable situation and salvage the nation from the financial “hawks” hovering on the country to depopulate the citizenry through instalmental killings as a consequence of the harrowing and unsafe condition of living. Mr. President must be conscious of the fact that the recent sharp increase in the prices of petroleum products have shot the prices of goods and services beyond the reach of the common man that is cannot boast of a meal per day.
And with corresponding increase by quadrupling in the cost of essential commodities that could be available to ordinary Nigeria.
The increase is inequitable, in just and undesirable . We must revert to the old fuel pump price MN128 to make life worth living for the people. Mr. President must halt the present drift!
