Buhari’s Resolve to Leave a Legacy

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari defied all odds to continue in power over the affairs of the most populous black nation in the world. His emergence as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2015 and his subsequent re-election in 2019 seem to validate the hope and trust reposed on him by majority of Nigerians. He also had braced up and delivered developmental projects in the areas of Agriculture, transport and youth empowerment. However his efforts in the areas of poverty reduction, insecurity, and employment have become albatrosses that confront his administration on a daily basis. Besides these, his administration has not fared well in the area of service delivery.
IT is therefore a sign of government that self examines itself, and seeks to correct its errors when President Muhammadu Buhari insisted that he would improve access to quality education, health care and enhance productivity. These three vital areas would if given the right approach and attention they deserve create youth empowerment, employment and promote the reduction of the nation’s mortality rate.
HOWEVER, the continued strikes in the health and academic sectors in Nigeria suggest that there is a need to declare a state of emergency in these areas. Also, there is the need to develop a critical roadmap through collaborations with the stakeholders in these sectors, develop a set of achievable objectives within a given time frame, and allocate critical resources in order to make his words become a viable and veritable reality.
IN order to sustain the nation’s position as a profitable investment destination, THE HOPE strongly admonishes the President to focus on making the nation investment friendly. With a detailed and measurable programme for the nation’s power sector, a huge hindrance to investment would have been taken care of.
WHILE creating ‘flexible tax system’ for various foreign investors; the people who make up the ‘large markets’, should not also be over taxed. The creation of an enviable and viable business environment must take into consideration the need for sustained and effective security. In recent times, the cumulative efforts of the security operatives are still below average.
THE HOPE enjoins government to give much impetus to community policing, intelligence gathering and motivation of the security personnel as well as corruption free financing for effective service delivery. In this context, the President is encouraged to create an atmosphere of friendliness and brotherhood, rather than the creation of fear and mistrust ion in political system.
OUR admonition comes from the President’s declaration before diplomats from many nations, that Nigerians are the ‘nation’s most prized assets’. This seems like late President Yar’Adua’s citizen diplomacy. In the business world, assets are given all the care needed to procure more assets, and also enhance their marketability. By this Presidential description of Nigerians, it is expected that directives would come from the Presidency to his cabinet and those that have the authoritative use of coercion to treat the citizens well. This good treatment should be evident in social relations, government policies and programmes; executive orders and legislations. Human development and the enforcement of the restoration of human dignity should be seen in this administration.
FINALLY, THE HOPE also applauds the identified priorities of the President and his government. These areas which include building a sustainable and thriving economy, enlargement of agricultural output for food security and export, attainment of energy sufficiency in power and petroleum products, enhancement of social inclusion and poverty reduction, as well as infrastructural development.
THE president has thus shown that he is aware of the critical needs of the nation, which is vital at these times. However, we hope that these identifications would also provoke proactive, loyal and sincere pursuits from the government.
WHILE some of these areas are interwoven, some could be isolated, pursued and achieved. This we enjoin the President and team to do. The desire for institutional change to fight corruption is also laudable. The new system must therefore have structures that not only prosecute corrupt cases, but must also prevent it.
THE President’s focus therefore to expand business growth, entrepreneurship, and industrialization has therefore become the yardstick to measure the level of success of this administration.
