CAF Champions League: Akwa , Rivers United win

It was a good start for the Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Champions League, Akwa United and River United recorded 1-0 each against their opponents.
Akwa United defeated CR Belouzidada 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium , Uyo, while Rivers United away victory against Tanzania side , Young Africans in the preliminary stages of the competition.
The game between Akwa United and Belouzidad lived up to the expectations as both team were current champions of their leagues and were able to sized up each other.
The end to end game with host Akwa United dominating the game, but the backline of the away side was able to withstand all the pressure.
The second half witnessed the same display but the Promise Keepers continued to press for a much-needed goal but the away side continued to frustrate their efforts.
The goal finally arrived in the 87th minute through a cool finish from Ubong Friday and all the efforts of Belouzidad to come back proved abortive.
Belouzidad will host Akwa United in the second leg of the preliminary round needing a 2 goals to progress while any draw will qualified the Nigeria side.
Meanwhile Rivers United were were rocked after 3 players and 2 officials of the team tested positive for Coronavirus before the kick-off.
The covid 19 conducted on the team in Lagos before their departure to Tanzania came out negative only to be tested positive in Tanzania.
The Pride of Rivers never allow the situation to deter them as they ground out a 0-1 away at Benjamin Mkpa stadium.
Moses Omodumuke netted the only goal of the game in the 51st minute and Nigeria did enough to secure a valuable away win.
The second leg is slated to come at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port-Harcourt next weekend.
