Catholic Bishop tasks Tinubu on Osun political crisis

By Michael Ofulue, Osogbo

As political tension continues to heighten in Osun State, the Catholic Bishop of Osogbo Diocese, Most Reverend Dr. John Akin Oyejola, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and restore peace to the state.

Speaking with journalists on the rising political unrest that has engulfed the state in recent days, the cleric condemned the spate of violence, killings, and maiming of innocent citizens.

Bishop Oyejola urged the President, as a leader of the nation, to take decisive steps in addressing the crisis, stressing that no meaningful development could be achieved in an atmosphere of violence and insecurity.

He also appealed to political actors to sheathe their swords and embrace peace, noting that the continued unrest posed a serious threat to the stability of the state.

Ahead of the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025, the bishop charged security agencies to ensure adequate protection of lives and property before, during, and after the polls. He further urged residents to actively participate in the electoral process while maintaining peace and order.

Describing the ongoing political turmoil as unfortunate and needless, the bishop warned that failure to resolve the crisis could further dent the nation’s image on the global stage.

He reiterated the commitment of the Catholic Church to praying for the country’s leaders and called on them to govern with fairness and a sense of responsibility.

Bishop Oyejola enjoined all peace-loving citizens to remain law-abiding and continue to pray for the restoration of peace in Osun State.
