Catholic Bishop urges leaders to promote unity, tolerance

By Michael Ofulue, Osogbo

Political and Christian leaders have been urged to prioritise unity over division by preaching peace, demonstrating love, and fostering tolerance among Nigerians.

The Catholic Bishop of Osogbo Diocese, Most Reverend Dr John Akin Oyejola, made this appeal while addressing Catholic faithful at the Solemnity of Christ the Universal King, popularly known as Corpus Christi.

The celebration, which marked the end of the liturgical year in the Catholic Church, precedes the beginning of a new liturgical year with the Advent season, culminating in the celebration of Christmas—the birth of Jesus Christ.

In his homily at St Benedict Catholic Cathedral in Osogbo, Bishop Oyejola called on Nigerian leaders and Christian fathers, who serve as heads of their families, to use their leadership roles to unite the people.

He emphasised that continuous preaching of peace by those in positions of authority, as well as fathers leading their homes, would create a better society where everyone can live happily.

“Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King, a celebration that marks the climax of the liturgical calendar of the Church. We reflect on how Pontius Pilate questioned Jesus, asking if He was a king,” the Bishop stated.

He explained that Jesus confidently responded to Pilate, affirming His kingship and revealing the purpose of His birth. According to the Bishop, Christ, as the Universal King, came to establish unity, love and peace, which Christians commemorate during Christmas.

“Parents, especially fathers, should protect their families, provide for them, and ensure they live in peace and harmony, as this aligns with Christ’s mission. Anyone in a leadership position must preach tolerance and peace, as these are the only ways to ensure a meaningful life for all,” he said.

The Chief Shepherd of Osogbo Diocese also encouraged Christians, particularly Catholics, to show love and kindness to their fellow human beings. He urged them to pray fervently and live worthy lives that would guarantee them a place in heaven.

He added that the Church would hold a procession to proclaim Christ’s kingship and bless the people of Osogbo.

The Bishop also used the occasion to pray for Nigeria during this period of economic hardship, calling on leaders to implement measures to alleviate the suffering of the masses.

The celebration culminated with a procession led by the Bishop, carrying the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of Osogbo.

Parishes within the state capital gathered at Freedom Park, where final blessings were bestowed upon the people by the Bishop, bringing the programme to a close.
