Palpable joy was felt at the University of Medical Sciences, UNIMED, Ondo as pioneer students of the University ended their academic programme barely four years since the establishment of the university.
The 400 level students from Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology departments decked in white T-Shirts came out of the examination hall in a festive mood as they sign on each other’s shirt, using permanent marker.
“The journey has not been easy but it is rather short. We started in January, 2016 and here we are in 2019 the last paper is done. I’m so excited,”said Dolapo Ajidagba, from Anatomy Department.
According to Bolanle Ajao, from Physiology department: “It has been an exciting journey, we came in as the first set, and it was like a test run but the school treated us well, I’m so grateful I’m able to reach this level. At that time there was no accreditation.
We were scared because if we don’t get accreditation we might be sent back home or start elsewhere again but we got the accreditation when we were in 200 to 300 level.
“The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Friday Okonofua has lived up to his words, he is always looking out for the students.
Kayode Bright from Biochemistry department said: “It has been a very memorable experience, despite the challenges, we are here today. When we were given admission, we just hope the university be given accreditation. I give kudos to the management of the school, they have done well getting the accreditation within four years”.
Nifemi Adewumi from Physiology Department had this to say: “I feel super excited and fulfilled because it is not easy, a journey of four years with so many ups and downs but I scaled through. It’s an opportunity of seeing the world now with a good certificate and from a reputable university”.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Friday Okonofua, on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate and Staff of UNIMED congratulated the students and wished them success in their endeavors.
He said, “I am extremely proud of this first set of students at UNIMED – diligent, resourceful, hardworking and highly knowledgeable. I congratulate them and wish them all the very best as they enter the job market
Okonofua noted that UNIMED will give them all the necessary enablement and support to ensure that they excel in their chosen profession.
“An interaction with industry and employers of labour is being organised for them in October, so that they can define their future career and work plan more clearly”.
He added that the maiden convocation ceremony of the university has been slated for the first week of December this year when graduating students will be officially celebrated.
