At least eight people have been confirmed dead after a cement-laden truck lost control and crashed in Akungba-Akoko in Akoko South-West Local Government area of Ondo State, on Wednesday.
The lone accident, which occurred around the popular Holy Trinity Church area of the town, involved a single truck loaded with cement.
The Hope gathered that the truck was descending from a hilly section of the road when it ran into a barricade, lost control and rammed into people and nearby structures, killing eight persons on the spot.
The deceased comprised five males, two females, and a male child, while no injuries were recorded among survivors.
An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said, “Trailer was coming from up, we couldn’t say if the barricade was opened, because some people said the trailer destroyed the barricade. Like five people have died while we don’t know how many are under the trailer.”
The crash, which has thrown the community into mourning, brought back memories of previous incidents in the town involving heavy-duty trucks.
Security operatives and emergency responders were seen at the scene, making efforts to evacuate the bodies and clear the wreckage to restore order in the area.
