A violent chieftaincy dispute in Akure, Ondo State, has allegedly driven members of the Akinola family into exile due to a series of attacks and threats related to the contested title of Chief Maiyegun of Isolo Community.
The conflict began following the death of Chief Moses Akinola, the former Maiyegun of Isolo. While tradition dictated that, Professor Olatunde Akinola, should succeed him, this succession was reportedly challenged by stepsons of late Chief Moses Akinola, headed by Prince Olufemi Akinola, who sought to claim the position for themselves.
What started as a family dispute quickly escalated into violence. On January 14, 2019, suspected thugs affiliated with the rival faction attacked Professor Akinola residence in Akobo-Ojurin, Ibadan, vandalizing the property, violently injuring Professor Akinola with machetes, and breaking the leg of his wife, Mrs. Florence Akinola.
The thugs left a written threat indicating the whole lineage of Professor Olatunde Akinola would be wiped out if he refuses to given up the title and position to Prince Olufemi Akinola.
In the wake of the attack, the family fled their home, notified security agencies, and had to seek medical attention to treat the injuries which were sustained during the ugly incident
Fearing for their safety, Professor Olatunde Akinola advised his younger son to remain in Australia, while urging his elder son Mr. Ayobami Akinola to stay in the United States and seek the necessary protection to save his life from the ongoing chieftaincy dispute.
The resolution of the chieftaincy dispute within the family is currently pending, thereby necessitating the deferral of the appointment to the Maiyegun of Isolo Community, Akure, Ondo State until a definitive resolution is reached.
