Cholera outbreak yet to be discovered in Okitipupa
…as Expert advises Nigerians to maintain regular sanitation and hygienic living
From Kayode Olabanji, Okitipupa
The Chief Medical Director of the State Specialist Hospital in Okitipupa, Dr. Olujide Ayenumelo, has urged Nigerians to consistently practice regular sanitation and hygienic living as a means to combat the outbreak of cholera in various parts of the country.
Ayenumelo gave this advice while speaking with The Hope correspondent on Monday in Okitipupa.
The medical expert stated that a cholera outbreak has not yet been discovered in Okitipupa and its surroundings, but medical experts at the hospital are on high alert for any signs of the disease.
He explained that cholera is caused by consuming food and water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The symptoms include severe diarrhea (watery stool), vomiting, dehydration, weakness, muscle cramps, fever, low blood pressure, and thirst.
He added that cholera spreads when people fail to wash their hands with soap and water after using the toilet and then handle or prepare food with unwashed hands.
According to him, cholera spreads more rapidly in unclean environments where dirt, leftovers, blockages in drainage, and the consumption of unclean food and water are prevalent.
“People must practice regular sanitation, proper disposal of waste, frequent handwashing with soap, especially after using the toilet, and ensure food is cooked properly and water is boiled before consumption,” he said.
He also mentioned that the hospital has begun educating residents on the importance of maintaining regular sanitation and hygienic living to prevent the spread of the disease.
He encouraged residents experiencing any of the symptoms to visit the general hospital for proper care.
