Travel bags are indispensable items that hold our belongings when we go on trips whether short or long, by air, road, or train. They come in various sizes and types to suit different needs.

Some travel bags are suitcases, which can either be hard-shell or soft-shell.  Hard-shell suitcases are durable, water-resistant, and ideal for protecting fragile items.  Soft-shell suitcases, on the other hand, are more flexible, lightweight, and often expandable making them perfect for air travel, business trips, or extended holidays.

There are also traditional duffel bags, which are soft and feature a large single compartment.  Rolling duffels, a hybrid between a suitcase and a duffel, offer the best of both worlds.  These are great for sports trips, short getaways, or car and train travel.

Backpacks come in several varieties. There are smaller ones for daily use or short trips, travel backpacks with multiple compartments for better organisation, and hiking backpacks, which are ergonomic and designed with load-bearing frames.  These are ideal for adventure travel, backpacking, or minimalist journeys.

For those travelling for formal occasions or work, garment bags help keep suits and dresses wrinkle-free, perfect for business travellers or special events.

Trunks or travel boxes, typically made from hard plastic or aluminium, offer high durability and large storage capacity.  They are stackable and great for carrying gear or equipment, making them ideal for long-haul trips, camping, or relocating.

Tips for choosing the best travel bags

1. Quality

Look closely at the quality of the bag. Consider the material, can it withstand the weight of your belongings? Is the handle sturdy and is it weather-resistant? If the bag has wheels, check how durable and stable they are—are there two or four wheels? Also, examine the lock system, does it offer anti-theft features? Ultimately, the quality of your bag determines its durability.

2. Type of trip

Think about the nature of your journey. Is it a business trip, a holiday, a sporting event, or an adventure? Will you be carrying heavy equipment? Your answers will help determine the most suitable type of bag. If you are travelling by water, a water-resistant bag is essential.

3. Size

Consider the length of your trip and the amount of luggage you’ll be carrying. Is the bag spacious enough, or might it be unnecessarily large for your needs.    Choosing the right size will ensure convenience and comfort throughout your journey.

4. Budget

Decide how much you’re willing to spend. Remember, quality often comes at a price. It is better to invest in a good travel bag once than to keep replacing a poor-quality one. Buy once, buy right.

Final tip

When choosing a travel bag, always prioritise quality.  Also consider the size and type of trip, and stick to a budget that allows you to purchase something durable and fit for purpose.  A good travel bag should be functional, reliable, and make your journey easier—not harder.
