The recent discovery of a group of a church members living in the church’s underground purportedly waiting to be transported to heaven after their pastor told them so, is one of the saddening developments in the Christendom that further discredit the household of faith.
Some people had gathered people like them and hypnotized them into staying enclosed in an underground. These people were of varying ages comprising children and adults. Their pastors had told them that they had been furnished with the date of rapture and they were deceived into giving up their independence in awaiting the planned rendezvous.
Among them were women that had been hoodwinked into abandoning their matrimonial homes and children of school age that were denied the prerequisite schooling as prescribed by the law. Investigation revealed that when their people came for them, they were denied access.
Their hideout was discovered following a report lodged at the Police station in Fagun Division, Ondo town, that some children were being harboured at the Whole Bible Believers Church also known as Ondo Church, Valentino area.
Policemen were dispatched to the church to invite the Pastor and the members of the church. However on sighting the Police, the church members attacked them. They were probably apprehensive. We all know what an “invitation” by Nigerian police means.
Preliminary investigation by the Police revealed that one Pastor Josiah Peter Asumosa, an Assistant Pastor in the church was the one who told the members that rapture will take place in April but later said it has been changed to September 2022 and told the young members to obey only him and not their parents.
A part three student also dropped out of school due to the strange teachings of the Pastor and left home in January 2022 to start living in the Church.
In all, seventy seven members; twenty six children, eight teenagers and forty Three adult members were rescued from the church. It was bizarre that such indoctrination had been going on right under our nose in a popular city as Ondo and growing unfettered.
Investigations will hopefully reveal all the atrocities that had been committed in the name of religion.
The two pastors were detained in Police custody and another drama ensued when some of the church members refused to go home unless their pastors were released.
It is so infuriating. Had it not been for democracy and the principles of the rule of law, the police should have whipped some much needed sense into them.
The church in recent times has become an all comers business in Nigeria. Anyone could own a church. Any structure could house a church. Be it the mountains, halls, warehouses, shops, apartments even in the marketplace. It has become a very porous venture which continue to grow in leaps and bounds because it lack regulations.
Attempts by the government at a few times to bring some measure of sanity to bear in the sector was met with stiff resistance. They waxed hot saying that no government has the right to regulate churches.
While some Men of God issued veiled threats of God’s wrath descending on such a government, bolder clergymen were actually daring towards the authorities!
Truly there are still some genuine men of God but recently the work of the Ministry have been proliferated by unscrupulous men that are least interested in the things of God. All they are after is enriching their pockets and becoming famous. Some of them have more sinister motives and are ready to rape, maim or kill to amass wealth.
Most of the people that thronged the church programmes were women of varying ages. They are there to see the prophet. God is not in their thoughts. Just desire to listen to visions and get an easy way out of their problems.
Most of them would be looking pensive as they wondered whether it would get to their turn to see the prophet that day. In almost all churches of the prophets in Nigeria, this is the usual scene.
Hmmm….indeed, man’s existence is full of ups and downs. In most life challenges, women are mostly affected as often times, they are the ones that stand in the gap for their men and families.
Women are known to be naturally worried. However instead of seeking the face of God in seeking solutions to their problems, they run after men in clergy clothes. A bible verse aptly describes the scenario.
” Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
“For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
” Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
The above quotes were derived from the writings of Timothy, one of the Apostles that arose after the death of Christ; a staunch follower of the doctrines left behind by Christ and which all Christians make allusions to even till the present time as their watchword.
His writings showed utter disdain for such women and their “daddies in the lord”. It all goes to show that the current trend in the Christendom whereby some women are led astray by fake prophets is not new. It must have been happening in the days of the Apostles.
Although montoring and counseling are essential ingredients of pastoral work but some pastors/prophets have led most gullible women in their fold astray by mentoring them wrongly oftentimes for what they (men of God) would stand to gain.
Olaide (not real names) is a single lady in search of a husband. She is getting on in years but the man of her dreams was nowhere in sight.
She heard of a prophet somewhere in the Akure metropolis reputed for making the things one desire to happen and she went to his church.
The man of God on beholden the beautiful damsel before him told her that her case was very simple as she had found favour with the angels working with him.
He said that the solution to her problems lied in her lying with him, chest to chest which will cause some of his anointing to flow into her body and thereby cure her of the evil influence tormenting her.
She was confused and she told the man of God that she would be back. Though the man had only said that they would lie chest to chest but who knows the progression that could ensue from there; it leaves little to the imagination.
If Olaide later acquiesced to the touching of her endowed chest with the prophet’s flat ones, no man knows. Many women have been forced to do more bizarre things so that they could get solutions to their problems.
Few years ago, a video clip showed a pastor and a church member having sex in a bush trended on the social media. Anyone who watched the video could see the shock of discovery on their faces as the pastor lying atop the woman looked up in shock and unfortunately looked into the camera.
Most women are gullibly led astray by this crop of men mentioned above probably because they lack knowledge and erroneously believe that a mere man can solve their problems.
These days, the church auditorium is filled with women of different kinds of mind frames. What most of them are after is what they could not get from their relationships.
They abound in different church programmes. They move from one mountain to the next valley in search of that elusive thing; happiness. Unfortunately, gone are those mindset of the crop of apostles that arose after the day of Pentecost.
What obtains now is the latter day pastors consisting mostly of men who are driven into the work of ministry by the harsh economic realities in our society. Many are of the opinion that politics and church business are the most lucrative businesses in Nigeria as at present.
In these churches, women make the bulk of the worshippers. They are seen regularly at programmes while the number of their male counterparts present in such programmes are very minimal.
Most of these women love and respect their pastors more than their husbands. They become emotionally attached to their pastors who listen to their worries, sooth them and also pray with them.
Women are such simple creatures with simple needs. Little wonder, they often get carried away by some of these men who paraded themselves as Men of God but are actually wolves in sheep’s clothing.
The Christendom is now the butt of cruel jokes as many Nigerian comedians are now eking a living out of making fun of Men of God.
It shows how much the Christendom has fallen into disrepute. Many atrocities had been committed by these wolves in sheep’s clothing all in the guise of being a Man of God.
This must not be allowed to continue. Many have found their way into the clergy fold, all in a bid to make money. They must be monitored and flushed out if detected. The Christian body must arise and combat this menace before it eats us all up. There should be a means of weeding out these bad eggs. They should be arrested and their churches shut down.
