Commercial driver gets 15 strokes for assaulting Police Officer

A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kaduna on Thursday sentenced a 36-year old commercial driver, Mustapha Aminu, to 15 strokes of the cane, for assaulting a police officer on duty.
Aminu, a resident of Ungwan Sanusi, was convicted of attacking Sergeant Adamu Maigari by striking him on the head with a log of wood.
He pleaded guilty to the charge.
Delivering judgment, Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel said the punishment was to serve as a deterrent to others who might consider committing a similar offence.
“This is to make you understand the gravity of your actions and to serve as a warning to others. I hereby order a court official to administer 15 strokes of the cane,” Emmanuel ruled.
He further cautioned Aminu to stay away from crime and focus on his job to become a useful member of society.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that the incident occurred on January 29 at about 2 p.m.
He said Aminu was driving recklessly when Sergeant Maigari stopped him, but instead of complying, he attacked the officer with a log of wood.
Leo said the offence contravened Section 237 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
