Community seeks govt intervention over road collapse

The residents of Ibukunoluwa Community, Okeogba in Akure, have called on the Ondo State government for urgent intervention regarding the collapse of a major road that leads into the community.
The damage, caused by flooding, has rendered the road impassable, posing significant risks to lives and property in the area.
According to residents, the road has become unusable for vehicles and motorcycles and it has been barricaded to prevent accidents, with fears that it may soon become unsafe even for pedestrians.
Speaking with The Hope, Pastor Olusanya Oluwateru, the Vice Chairman of the community, described the situation as dire and worsening daily.
“The collapsed road is a growing threat to our community. This dish-like erosion has not only destroyed the road but has also encroached dangerously close to residential buildings. If nothing is done urgently, we fear losing both lives and property,” he lamented.
Pastor Oluwateru emphasised the strategic importance of the road, which links Ibukunoluwa Community to neighbouring areas such as Okeogba, Ijaro Estate, and the cultural hub of Ondo Road.
“A functional road here would ease traffic on the main routes and improve connectivity for both residents and motorists. We have approached the Ministry of Works, and although they visited and conducted inspections over seven months ago, no concrete action has been taken,” he explained.
He appealed to the state government for immediate action, adding that if the ministry acts swiftly, the situation can still be salvaged.
Another community member, who identified himself simply as Mr John, highlighted the anxiety among residents.
“I’ve lived here for nearly six years, and the situation has never been this alarming. The erosion has expanded to the point where it threatens several homes. We’ve tried filling the area with stones and taking multiple steps to prevent further damage, but the problem is beyond what we can handle as a community.
