Commuters along the Akure–Ilesa Expressway in Akure have expressed optimism over the ongoing construction of the Akure flyover, describing it as a project that will ease traffic congestion and transform the area upon completion.
A cross-section of motorists who spoke with Weekend Hope commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for his commitment to improving road infrastructure, noting that the flyover would turn the busy junction into an “Eldorado” once completed.
Recall that early this month, the Ondo State Government announced the temporary closure of a section of the expressway to allow for critical work on the flyover.
According to the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Engr. Olawoye Abiola, the closure, which lasted from Sunday, October 5 to Friday, October 10, 2025, was to facilitate the casting and placement of pre-stressed beams.
Following the reopening of the road, Weekend Hope observed that while the project remains ongoing, the section underneath the flyover has been reopened to traffic.
A motorist, Solomon Folorunsho, noted that although progress at the site has been gradual, the reopening of the road has eased traffic flow considerably. “The flyover is not yet completed, but vehicles can now pass under it, which has made movement much easier,” he said.
Another commuter, Mr. Victor Bamidele, described the flyover as long overdue and commended the government for its progress so far. He expressed optimism that its completion would bring significant relief to motorists and residents
Similarly, a motorcyclist, Ozovehe Isah, observed that while the flyover is not yet open for use, the road underneath is already accessible. “Once the flyover is completed, those who used to cross the road below will move up, reducing traffic beneath,” he explained.
A nearby resident, Iyanuoluwa, stated that much work remains to be done, but believed that the project would eventually ensure free vehicular movement in all directions.
Similarly, another resident, Angela Uka, said that while the flyover was yet to be opened, motorists are already making use of the road beneath. She also urged the government to extend repairs to adjoining roads to complement the flyover project.
