Coronavirus: ODIEC says April 18 LG polls sacrosanct .Provides safety measures

Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission, ODIEC, has said that the April 18 local government elections would hold as scheduled.
This came as a result of calls for the shift of the election by political groups due to the fear of coronavirus.
The commission assured that necessary precautionary measures have been put in place to curtail the transmission of the deadly diseases on the day of elections.
The Commissioner in charge of Media and Publicity Mr. Rotimi Olorunfemi stated this while speaking with journalists on the safety measures put in place by ODIEC to allay fear being entertained by the public from being affected by the dreadful diseases on the election day.
According to him, the commission has procured hand sanitizers and flowing plastic water cans among others which have been dispatched to all of the area offices in the 18 local government areas its state including offices at the headquarters.
He said the hand sanitizers and other safety measures would be made available to each polling unit for regular washing of hands on election day.
The spokesperson also disclosed that the commission on the election day would put in place crowd control measures in each polling unit and collation centre by not attending to not more than 20 people including the officials of the commission at a time to forestall any outbreak of the disease.
He added that hand gloves would be distributed to the officials of the commission to have their hands protected
Olorunfemi further revealed that commission had made arrangement to collaborate with the state Ministry of Health to provide health facilities at each collation center as part of safety measures.
“Basically, with this safety measures we will prevent the disease on the day of elections” he assured.
