Corps members charged on national development

The Director of Procurement for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr. Olawole Chris Jimba, has called on the Corps members to view their mobilisation as a deliberate effort to contribute positively to the national development of Nigeria.

He made this call during his address to the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State.

Jimba reminded the Corps members that their participation in the scheme is not just about fulfilling a national requirement, but also about playing an active role in the nation’s progress.

He highlighted that the country relies on the strength, resilience, and contributions of young Nigerians to drive development at all levels.

The Director expressed confidence in the abilities of the current batch of Corps members, noting that previous batches had left remarkable legacies in their various communities. He encouraged the new Corps members to surpass these achievements and continue the tradition of excellence.

“Your mobilisation and subsequent deployment to different states across the federation are intended to strengthen national unity and cohesion,” Jimba stated.

He added that many distinguished personalities, including the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed, have emphasised the value of the Corps members’ lives and the Scheme’s commitment to their safety.

Jimba encouraged the Corps members to leave a lasting legacy at their places of primary assignment and in their host communities. He urged them to use the skills they acquire during the service year to make a significant difference, particularly in rural areas that need their attention and support.

He also highlighted the importance of the NYSC’s Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, which offers Corps members the opportunity to gain new skills. According to Jimba, these skills will give them an edge in today’s competitive job market, where employment opportunities are increasingly scarce.

While encouraging Corps members to embrace the SAED programme, Jimba stressed that relying solely on academic credentials will not guarantee job security in the current economy.

He advised Corps members to aim to become employers of labour, creating opportunities for others instead of solely seeking paid employment.
Finally, the Director expressed his belief that the Corps members, through their discipline, commitment, and contribution, would be instrumental in shaping a better Nigeria. He urged them to work hard, serve selflessly, and always uphold the core values of the NYSC Scheme.
