Council boss warns against illegal use of official number plates

By Adeboye Ado

The authorities of Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State have issued a stern warning to individuals and groups allegedly using number plates bearing the council’s name without authorisation, describing the act as not only fraudulent but a crime punishable under the law.

The caution was contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of the council, Mr. Olagoke Adeyanju and made available to newsmen on Thursday.

Adeyanju, who spoke on behalf of the council boss, Esan Owolabi said the council had uncovered disturbing reports indicating that some unauthorised persons were making use of the council’s government number plates to perpetrate criminal activities including impersonation and various forms of fraud.

According to the statement, some automobile dealers in Ondo State were allegedly printing and displaying the local government’s number plates on vehicles to attract attention and advertise their cars online, a development the council described as a gross abuse of public trust and an act of criminality.

“This act is not only criminal but also a gross abuse of public trust. Those found guilty will face the full weight of the law,” the statement read.

It added that anyone in possession of such government property without due authorisation should immediately return it to the council or face the consequences of legal action.

The council further reiterated that all government-registered items especially number plates must be procured through officially recognised channels with appropriate documentation.

It warned that the era of tolerating impersonation or misuse of official insignia was over.

The statement also enjoined members of the public to assist security operatives and the council in fishing out those involved in the illegality by providing credible information that could aid investigation and prosecution.

While assuring residents that his administration was poised to flush out criminal elements within the local government, Owolabi vowed that no offender involved in the unlawful act would escape justice.

“We are determined to rid the local government of all acts of illegality. The long arm of the law will catch up with anyone involved,” the chairman declared.
