Court jails serial burglar six years over theft

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Akure, has sentenced a man, Moses Jacob, to six years’ imprisonment, for breaking into several shops and stealing items valued over N1,000,000.
The convict was accused of unlawfully breaking into shops in Oda town, Akure, on October 18, 2024, at about 11:00 p.m., and stealing various goods.
He was arrested by operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, and subsequently arraigned on six counts of burglary and theft.
Among the stolen items were clothes and a Philips iron valued at N370,000, belonging to one Metelowa Damilare.
Jacob was also accused of stealing men’s and women’s clothing, alongside pairs of Timberland slippers worth N626,000, the property of one Olorunsola Opeyemi.
In addition, the convict carted away several food items, including half a rubber of rice, four rubbers of beans, two sachets of Honeywell semolina, five packs of Golden Penny wheat, and orher items, all valued at N85,480, belonging to Everjoy Adebusuyi.
The state prosecutor, N.J. Osele, told the court that Jacob’s actions violated Sections 383, 390(9), and 413 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37 Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
Jacob pleaded guilty to all charges. The prosecutor, in his submission, urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence.
Magistrate T.I. Ayodele-James, in her ruling, described the offence as grievous and sentenced the defendant to six years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine.
