Court jails student 15 months for stealing TV, beans

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, has sentenced a 24-year old student, Daniel Nuhu, to 15 months in a correctional centre, for stealing household items, including a television, a laptop, and 35 measures of beans.

Nuhu was arraigned by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on charges of criminal trespass and theft.

The defendant pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

NSCDC prosecutor, Marcus Audu, told the court that the complainant, Deborah Swam, reported the incident at the NSCDC office in Kafanchan on March 5, 2025.

Audu explained that Nuhu unlawfully entered the complainant’s house in Zonkwa and stole various items, but was caught by one Fidelis Malam.

He listed the stolen items to include, a television, a laptop, three smartphones, a box, and 35 measures of beans.

The offences, he said, contravened Sections 327 and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

In his ruling, Magistrate Michael Bawa sentenced the defendant to three months in prison with an option of a N30,000 fine for trespass and 12 months in prison with a N50,000 fine for theft.

The court also ordered Nuhu to pay N200,000 as compensation to the complainant.
