Five bank robbery suspects have been remanded by the Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure over alleged armed robbery.
The defendants; Adeniyi John, Olubodun Fatoye, Bamidele Francis, lsmaila Ojo and Victor Owoyemi ,were charged with three counts bordering on conspiracy, armed robbery and attempted armed robbery.
They allegedly committed the offences on February 6, 2020 at about 4:30pm at First Bank Nigeria Limited lle-Oluji, Ondo State.
The state prosecutor, H.M Falowo, told the court that the defendants and others at large conspired to commit a felony to wit armed robbery.
She said the defendants, while armed with firearms, explosives and other dangerous weapons, robbed First Bank Nigeria Limited, lle-Oluji Branch of the sum of N60million.
The prosecutor further said on February 6, 2020 at about 4:13pm at Polaris Bank Limited, lle-Oluji, the defendants, while armed with firearms, and other dangerous weapons, attempted to rob Polaris Bank Limited, lle- Oluji of the money kept in the bank.
The offences contravene Section 6 (b), 1, (2) (a) and (b), 2 (2) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap. R11, Volume. 14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the offences leveled against them when the charges were read.
Falowo, therefore, asked for a date to present witnesses.
The defence counsel, A.Y Aliu, did not oppose the prosecutor’s application.
Justice Yemi Fasanmi, ordered the remand of the defendants at the Olokuta Correctional Centre till June 8, 2023 for further hearing.
