Court remands driver over student’s death

An Ondo Chief Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of a 36-year-old van driver, Benson Egbai, in Shegede prison, Ondo town over the death of a 21-year-old student, Hafiz Aremu.
The Hope Metro gathered that Egbai, was the driver of a Nissan patrol towing van with number plate Lagos KTU 03 XK.
He was said to have driven and dangerously on the public highway which caused the death of the deceased.
Egbai was alleged to have committed the offence on November 2, 2018 at about 9am at Igunshin, along Ondo /Ore road Ondo in the Ondo Magisterial District.
The prosecution said the offences contravened Sections 18 and 18(1) of the Road Traffic Laws, Cap 136, Volume 3, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.
But the plea of the defendant was not taken.
The police prosecutor, Sgt Gbenga Akinsulure, applied for a date to await the legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
She directed that hearing notice should be served on the state Commissioner of Police and the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
The Magistrate, Mrs Odenusi Fadeyi, adjourned the case till January 14, 2019.
