Court remands fake Banker over N.5m fraud

A surveyor, Abanee Sunday, who allegedly pretended to be an account officer with a first generation bank, in Okitipupa has been charged to court for duping an elderly woman of the sum of N495,000.

The police prosecutor, Ayodeji Omoyegha, said Abanee obtained the sum of N495,000 from the complainant, one Madam Olasejo Oladunjoye, under false pretence of being an account officer with the bank.

Omoyegha told the court that Sunday and others at large conspired to deceive the victim by promising to assist her secure a loan on March 11, 2019 at about 10:am at IIu-Titun in Okitipupa Local Government area of Ondo State.

The offence of conspiracy, according to the prosecutor, contravened section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The charge sheet read in part, ” That you, Sunday Abanee ’m’, a surveyor and others now at large on March 11, 2019 at about 10:am, did parade  yourself as First Bank account officers and obtained the sum of N495,000 only from the account number 3118795446, belonging to one Madam Olasejo  Oladujoye and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 419 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

Omoyegha told the court how the defendant was arrested and brought to the police station for interrogation.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to all the five count  charge .

The presiding magistrate, Mr D. O Ogunfuyi, admitted the defendant to bail  in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The two sureties, he added, must be reasonable and responsible, while they must show evidence of tax payment for the current year.

The case was adjourned till June 16, 2019.
