Court remands labourer, others for stealing plantain, yams

An Akure Chief Magistrate Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of three men at the Olokuta Correctional Centre, for stealing bunches of plantain and tubers of yam worth N115,000.
The defendants, Moses John, 25; Moses Changewak, 27 and John Simon, 25 were arrested and arraigned before the court for conspiracy and stealing.
The police prosecutor, Joseph Bolorunduro, informed the court that between August and October 1, at Ikota town in Ijare, the trio conspired to commit felony to wit stealing some bunches of plantain and yams valued at N115,000, property of one Idowu Adebusyi .Bolorunduro said the first defendant, John, who is a labourer on the farm, led the 2nd defendant, Changewak and 3rd defendant, Simon, to steal some bunches of plantain and tubers of yams worth N115,000, belonging to the complainant, Adebusuyi.
The offences were contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol.1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.
John pleaded guilty to the charges against him while the other two defendants, Changewak and Simon pleaded not guilty.
Following the not guilty pleas of the 2nd and 3rd defendants, the defence counsel, I.B Ogunlusi, urged the court to grant them bail.
The Magistrate, O.I. Ogunmoyela granted the 2nd and 3rd defendants N100,000 bail each with one surety each in like sum.
He consequently ordered the remand of the first defendant at the Olokuta Correctional Centre till the next adjournment.
He adjourned the case till October 23, 2023 for a hearing.
