An Akure Magistrate’s Court sitting in Oke-Eda has remanded a 21-old-year-old man, Godfrey Nanjing, in Olokuta Correctional Centre over attempted murder.
The Magistrate, Tope Aladejana, who did not take the defendant’s plea, directed the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
The defendant, who resides at Ijo Mimo street, Ijoka is being tried for conspiracy and attempted murder.
The Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Suleiman Abudlateef told the court that the defendant and other persons still at large committed the offences at about 11:00 am, beside St. Jacob Hotel, Alagbaka Akure on August 13, 2022, in the Akure Magisterial District.
Abudlateef said that the defendant unlawfully assaulted one Sarafa Ganiyu ‘m’ by beating him with his fist and also stabbed him with a broken bottle, inflicting injuries on his body.
“The defendant and others captured the victim, held him down, and stabbed him all over his body with bottles and knives.
“The victim would have been stabbed to death if not for the timely intervention of the neighbours who were present at the scene.
“The defendant was arrested while others escaped.”
The prosecutor said the defendant’s offence violated sections 516A (1) 252 and were punishable under section 355 of the Criminal Code Cap.37 Vol.1 Law of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.
According to him, Section 230 stipulates life imprisonment for attempted murder.
He urged the court to remand the defendant in prison to enable him forward his case file to the Director of Public Prosecution DPP for legal advice.
The defense counsel, Ola Adedire prayed the court to admit her client to bail in most liberal terms, adding that the defendant would not jump bail if the application is granted.
Magistrate Tope Aladejana ordered the remand of the defendant in Olokuta Correctional Centre.
He adjourned the case till September 5, 2022, for mention.
