Court remands two over alleged cult membership

By Oluwadamilola Akinduro

An Akure Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of two suspected cultists, Olarewaju Adeyeye, 29, and Wasiu Tijani, 23, for allegedly belonging to the Aiye confraternity.

The prosecution, led by Augustine Omhenimhen, told the court that the defendants, along with others at large, committed the offence on January 28, 2025, at about 2:50 p.m. along Akure-Owo Road, Ondo State.

Omhenimhen further informed the court that the suspects had confessed to being members of the outlawed cult group.

He stated that the alleged offence contravenes Section 1(1) of the Cultism, Secret Cult, and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, Cap 39, Volume 2 Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendants at Olokuta Correctional Centre, pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP.

In response, defence counsel, A.I. Seibu did not oppose the remand application. But he prayed the court to grant his clients bail, promising that they would not jump bail and

 would provide credible sureties.

Magistrate O.T. Lebi, however, ordered the remand of the defendants at Olokuta Correctional Centre and adjourned the case to May 22, 2025, for advice.
