COVID-19: Don’t endanger students’ lives, ODSG urges schools

Chairman, Inter ministerial Committee on Corona virus (COVID-19) and Vice Chancellor, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, Prof Adesegun Fatusi has called on schools to adhere strictly to COVID-19 protocols in order not to endanger students and pupils’ lives.
He made the call yesterday while speaking with The Hope during a monitoring exercise alongside other members of the team, of some school in Ondo.
According to him, the potential for the virus to increase in number is high with government lifting ban on schools recently noting that it is important that schools comply with government guidelines in ensuring that the state is free from it.
While stating that government has been putting in place measures to ensure that the state does not experience another phase of the virus through regular meetings and monitoring, he advised people to put in their best in protecting themselves noting that the time to rest is not now.
He appealed to school owners to always ensure that their environment is safe and that students should be made to observe the necessary protocols adding that students who are sick should be made to vacate the school environment.
He advised schools to put in place a monitoring team to strengthen the response and also priotise social distancing maintenance.
Addressing students of St James Catholic Grammar school, Ondo, he explained that there are increase chances of infection with resumption of schools noting that government is passionate about the health of students hence the need for all to be prepared to fight the virus.
Commending the management of the school for putting in place measures like water, soap, thermometer and hand sanitisers among others, he applauded the high level of nose mask compliance by students, he called on those without it to get it and always have it on when in school.
While stating that the face mask must cover both nose and mouth, he charged the students on regular hand washing, maintaining social distancing among others.
Vice Principal of the school, Mr. Dahunsi Afolabi while speaking commended government efforts and assured that the school will continue to do the needful in preventing the spread of the virus in the state.
At St Helen’s Unity Secondary school, Ondo, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Dipo Durojaiye while addressing the students noted that it is their responsibility to protect themselves against the virus through the proper use of nose mask which according to him should be washable.
He advised management of the school to ensure that the students use face mask which will not suffocate them.
Principal of the school, Mrs Stella Olorunyomi stated that the school has been playing its part through regular sensitisation of the students among others and added that each students have been mandated to bring at least seven face mask to school.
The team also visited St Raphael’s kiddies school, Ondo where it made necessary correction.
