CPC to tackle extortions by service providers

By Fatima Muraina
|
As Nigeria joined other nations  to mark the 2019 World Consumer Rights Day, Consumers Protection Council, (CPC), has indicated its readiness to tackle the various means of extortions perpetrated by Network Service providers in the country.

The General Manager of the Ondo State Committee of the CPC, Mr Ayo Mesileya made this known at the weekend in a chat with The Hope in Akure.

He said consumers have the right for quality products and services for their satisfaction, urging them to report to the committee where such rights are denied or infringed upon.

He disclosed that the committee has received complaints from consumers about extortions of various forms which he said have been directed to the national body for urgent attention.

“The CPC is taken care of that at the Federal level because the services rendered by the Network service providers are coming from the Federal level”, he said.

Mesileya, in a statement earlier signed and made available to The Hope said this year’s celebration of the World Consumer Right Day was tagged: ‘Trusted Smart Products’

He harped on the need for all manufacturers, providers and sellers to always produce and sell quality products that would meet the needs of consumers.

The Day, Mesileya said is an avenue for raising global awareness about Consumer Rights and needs.

” Celebrating the day is a chance to demand that the rights of all Consumers are respected and protected to protest against market abuses and social injustices which tend to undermine those rights”, he said.

He enjoined manufacturers and sellers of goods and services in the state to produce goods and services that meet the needs and satisfaction of the consumers which he observed was in line with Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s policy to make life meaningful for the people.

It should be recalled that consumers of mobile Telecommunications Network have accused the network providers of indiscriminate extortions from subscribers across the nation.
