Some residents of Ikare Akoko in the Akoko North East Local Government area of Ondo State have defied the 24 – hour curfew imposed on the crisis ridden town, The Hope investigation has revealed.
The State Government had on Wednesday imposed the curfew on the town following eruption of violence.
The Government also deployed security agents to the area to enforce the curfew.
However, investigation by The Hope revealed that while the heart of the town, especially places like Jubilee Road, ‘Garage’ Oja Oba, Olukare’s Palace and the Ikare Central Mosque areas remained desolate, Oyinmo, Okela and Agolo High School areas had residents engaging in normal activities.
At Oyinmo Quarters, women turned up at the Owode market for buying and selling activities but ran away immediately they sighted men of the Nigerian Army enforcing the order.
In some areas, it was gathered that security agents set up blockades at strategic locations of the town to prevent people from moving about or coming into the town.
Many vehicles travelling from other parts of the state and neighbouring towns coming into Ikare were sent back by the security agents while many traders from outside coming to purchase tomato and peppers for sale in Ikare before the curfew were turned down from entering Ikare.
The curfew has however began to take its toll on the people as commercial activities have been shut down, commercial banks did not open for business while Muslims who are observing the Ramadan fast were forced to observe the Tarrawihi prayers in their various homes.
School children who prepared for school were also forced to return back to their various homes.
The chairman of Ikare Akoko Elders Forum, Mr James Oladetohun, appealed to the government to relax the curfew and enforce it from 6.00pm to 6.00am because of the economic life of the town.
Oladetohun commended Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s timely intervention on the crisis, saying this will go a long way to douse tension and safe lives and property.
