Ekiti State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 12 undergraduates of Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, (EKSU), during initiation ceremony in Ado-Ekiti.
The suspects’ names are given as Alaba Teniola, Ajayi Taiwo, Isaac Olasunkanmi, Adelowo Julius, Ajibola Ridwan, Temitope Emmanuel, Lawal Shefiu, David Temitope, Ayobami Idris, Ebenezer Olagunju, Balogun Moyosore and Omolara Adebayo.
According to the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Dare Ogundare, the suspects who are in various faculties in the state-owned university, were arrested by the operatives of the command at a popular hotel in Ado-Ekiti, during a brief ceremony organised by the group to welcome new members and presentation of certificates of commendation others.
The police boss said the suspected cultists are members of the “Buccaneer Confraternity”, a notable secret cult group, and have been terrorising other students in the area for sometimes.
He added that the suspects who are currently undergoing investigations at the command headquarters, Ado-Ekiti, would be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed on the matter.
Ogundare explained, “At about 12:30hrs on the fateful day, operatives of the Anti-Cultism attached to the command, acted on a tip-off from the members of the public and swooped on the gang of suspected cultists in one of the popular hotels very close to the University along Iworoko road, Ado-Ekiti.
“The suspected cultists dressed in several attires, were dancing and celebrating when the police arrived at the hotel and apprehended them.
” Items recovered from the suspected cult members are: two yellow berets with buccaneer symbol, three yellow hart caps with buccaneer symbol, two yellow Polo shirts with buccaneer symbol, one yellow tie with buccaneer symbol, one yellow head gear with buccaneer symbol.
“Other items recovered by the police are one key holder with buccaneer symbol, one yellow handkerchief with buccaneer symbol, one knife, a plaque with buccaneer inscription and a substance suspected to be charm with five cowries.”
The CP said the command appreciates members of the public, most especially good spirited individuals for their cooperation, by giving timely and useful information that led to some of the achievements recorded by the command in recent time.
He enjoined all residents of the state to be security conscious, vigilant and report any untoward incident or happening observed in their locality to the nearest police station.
