The Head of Governance and Development of Youth Initiative for Advocacy Growth Advancement (YIAGA), Africa, Mr. lbrahim Farouk has called for the need to increase effort in encouraging young people to come out enmasse to register in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration , CVR, and vote during election.
He maintained that a lots need to be done to let young people have trust in the election process in the country.
Farouk stated this during a radio programme on CREST FM, Akure, the Ondo State capital.
He explained that voting is a culture that must be inculcated in youths for them to know and understand the importance of vote to elect good leaders through election.
The Independence National Electoral Commission, INEC, he said should engage in activities that will make young people to build trust in the election process by providing information that will enable them to come out and vote as well have belief that their votes will count.
According to him, INEC within the ambit of the law should improve the electoral process to reduce time to be spent on election day.
“INEC should ensure that within 20 minutes, voters on election day go to polling units to cast their votes. This is another means to build trust in the commission,” he noted
Specifically averred that politicians had recently adopted vote-buying having realised that votes do count and therefore, urged young people not to have belief that votes do not count.
Farouk further advised youths to come out enmasse during future elections, saying that this will create more difficulty for politicians to buy votes and influence election process.
He enjoined them to continue in raising their voices and engage themselves in election process as well make their interest felt through participation in legislative process.
