Following viral speculation about the purported death of popular musician, Adekolu Modupe, also known as Ade Wesco, a reliable source has clarified that the juju guitarist is very much alive.
A source, who spoke with Friday Extravaganza on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the music maestro was recently discharged from hospital.
The source said, “Ade Wesco is alive. A particular post on Facebook suggesting his death has been pulled down. He was discharged from the hospital.”
Findings by Friday Extravaganza revealed that the Ifon-born musician rose to prominence with a unique style of music that is virtually synonymous with that of the late Orlando Owoh.
Contrary to widespread belief, Ade Wesco, renowned for his traditional folk music, was never an apprentice to any other artiste. He is entirely self-taught.
As a young man, he began his musical career by performing near the popular Oja Olorisa market square in Ifon, where he would sing and play the guitar to entertain passersby.
One of the most remarkable highlights of his early career came during the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970), when he performed for Nigerian Army troops, performances made possible through the support of his kinsman and fellow socialite, Chief Babatunde Awodeyi.
Over the years, the musical legend has not only captivated audiences across Nigeria but has also taken his art beyond the shores of the country to parts of Europe.
Ade Wesco, a multi-talented performer, formed the Destiny Dandies Band nearly five decades ago. Together, they recorded dozens of LPs under the popular audio/video label, Ibukun Orisunmiye, with Aye Wa Adun standing out as one of his most celebrated hits. He also released music under other record labels.
After a long hiatus from the music scene due to personal reasons, Ade Wesco made a powerful comeback with an album titled Endurance, released under Malio Entertainments and produced by lyrical maestro, Olayiwola Adisa (Lai Addis).
Even in his advanced age, Ade Wesco’s musical talent and skill remain vibrant and competitive, rivaling those of the younger generation. For him, music is not just a profession, it is his greatest joy and passion.
