No fever than 28 were feared dead in a fatal road accident that occurred along Ore-Lagos Expressway in Ondo State.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening at Mile 49 village in the Ore area of Odigbo Local Government.
Eyewitnesses said that the accident was caused by head-on collision involving two vehicles and was caused by excessive speeding.
A police source confirmed the accident, stating that the two vehicles collided head-on due to overspeeding and reckless driving.
Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State, confirmed the accident and warned drivers against overspeeding and other traffic violations.
Ibitoye said that the collision led to the loss of 28 lives out of 30 passengers. “It’s unfortunate that 28 people were burnt beyond recognition in this tragic accident, which was caused by excessive speeding and traffic violations,” Ibitoye said.
He emphasized that the primary responsibility of drivers is to safely transport passengers to their destinations, not to put their lives in danger.
“The contract between drivers and passengers is to take them safely to their destinations, not to their graves,” Ibitoye added.
The FRSC boss also urged passengers to play a role in road safety by cautioning reckless drivers or reporting them to FRSC personnel on the highway. “Everyone must participate in road safety.
Passengers can help by warning drivers who are violating traffic rules or reporting them to FRSC officials,” he said.
He called on all drivers to exercise patience and obey traffic laws to reduce road accidents and save lives.
Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the General Hospital in Ore. Two survivors, who sustained severe injuries in the crash, are also receiving treatment at the same hospital.
