DIG warns policemen against carrying arms to polling units

As Nigerians prepare for a hitch-free 2019 general elections, policemen assigned  election duties have been warned against the use of arms and ammunition at polling units.

This warning was handed down by the  Deputy Inspector General of Police  (DIG), in charge of  elections in the South West geo-political zone, in Akure the Ondo State capital on Monday, while addressing officers, and men of the force held at the command’s headquarters along Igbatoro Road in Akure.

Jubril who said carrying gun or any suspicious object to a polling unit contradicts the electoral act told them to take record of their observation and report of the unit and thereafter forward it to the Divisional Police Officer in charge of that jurisdiction who will submit same, to the Area Commander and later to the state police Commissioner.

He said the state police commissioner will also forward the said report to the Inspector General of Police office in Abuja, adding that the reason for such measures are for  proper documentation by the police authority.

His words: “every policeman posted for elections duty must write down the report of what happened in the area where he or she monitored. This report must be submitted to the DPOs who would forward it to the Area Commander and to the Police Commissioner (CP).The commissioner will later forward it to the IGP office in Abuja.

“As you know the police is in charge of internal security of the nation and all eyes are on us. We must prepare ourselves because if there is any litigation, the court so much rely on our report and that is the reason why we must take proper record of our observations, findings and all that happened during the election” he stated.

Jubril who is the DIG in charge of Training and Development, told his men to be professional in going about their lawful duty and advised them to shun money gratification for any act that is capable of denting the image of the force.

Also Speaking, the Assistant Inspector General of Police(AIG)  in charge of Zone 11 Comprising Oyo, Ondo and Osun States Olusola Leye  Oyebade urged the policemen in the Zone to rise up to the challenges of tackling kidnapping and Cultism which he said are taking worrisome dimension in Southwest.

He suggested the use of Community policing philosophy in solving heinous crime just as he commended the DIG for his visit to Ondo state assuring him that officers and men of the Zone have resolve to work for hitch free elections.

Earlier the state police commissioner Mr Undie Adie thank the DIG and AIG for their lecture assuring them that the police men in the state are committed to sustainable peace in state.
