It was a sad day for a nursing mother on Wednesday, as two foreign dogs grabbed  and killed her five months old baby in Halleluyah area of Ido-Osun, in Osun State.

The mother, simply identified as Mummy Basira, was also reportedly injured by the dogs.

Our correspondent learnt that the dogs suddenly jumped out of a building around the area and attacked the mother and her baby strapped to her back.

The unfortunate incident, according to reports,  happened around 3 pm and led to panic, as the dogs attacked the baby, killing her in the process, while residents watched helplessly as they devoured the child.

An eyewitness who craved anonymity told our correspondent that as the dogs,  German shepherds breed attacked the nursing mother and seized her baby, the woman who attempted to rescue the baby, was also attacked and injured.

“We all watched helplessly. The dogs, we were told, jumped out of a building that is not currently inhabited by anyone and seized the baby said to be about five months strapped to the back by the mother, and battered her.

“As they battered the baby, the mother tried to save her, but she could not. After killing her, the dogs attacked the mother, inflicting bodily injuries on her.

” Some residents later used sticks to chase away the dogs and rescued the mother. She was rushed to a hospital here in Osogbo

“The house where the dogs came out from is not inhabited, but residents know those that use to visit the place. They have been calling their mobile numbers, but their lines have been switched off. The tension is presently high in that neighbourhood. We reported the matter at Estate Police Station in Osogbo,” the eyewitness said.

Contacted, the spokesperson of Osun State Police Command, SP Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the incident.

She said operatives had launched a manhunt for the owner of the dogs.

The PPRO described the incident as unfortunate, adding that police must apprehend the owner of the dogs and bring them to justice.
