A notable professor of counselling psychology, Professor Kayode Alao, has advised members of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), Ondo City Chapter, to constantly seek for self-development, so as to boost their skills and make them globally competitive.

Alao gave the advice in a lecture delivered at an event organized to mark the 2nd anniversary of the NIM in Ondo City Chapter, held at the New Centre for Educational Technology Building in Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo.

The Don further stated that the application of counselling principles and procedures are needed by managers in the quest of achieving effective leading and planning, saying the move would help in proffering solutions to human problems that may arise in their organizations.

Alao described man as the most important and complex variable in management, stating that “anybody who manages man knows that he is managing somebody with lots of problems”,he stressed.

As a way of overcoming difficulties in human management, the counseling expert emphasized the need for managers to use counselling tools, insisting that the step would enable them manage their organization effectively.

He listed three counselling tools that could be used to include operational philosophy, counselling theories and techniques as well as counselling assessment and evaluation procedures.

Alao described counselling as the application of psychological principles and procedures that could be used in solving human problems.

He added that because of the similarity in roles and objectives performed by counseling and management, the two fields of human endeavours are closely related.
