‘Don’t neglect child’s education for daily bread’

By Joseph Olupona

Stakehokders in the education sector have admonished parents not abandon their children’s education in view of the current economic collapse in the country.

The stakeholders, who spoke with The Hope on the effects of the current harsh economic situation on the education sector, said many Nigerians barely feed and sending children to school was a huge sacrifice on the part of the parents.

A Retired Principal, Pastor Funmilola Eniola said the struggle for daily bread had taken most parents’ time, saying this would hamper the children’s development.

She advised that parents should ensure the education of their children did not suffer any setback.

Similarly, a retired Headmaster, Chief Joseph Aboyeji stated that economic struggle had prevented many parents from giving enough care and attention to their children.

According to him, it would be difficult for parents battling economic hardship to provide quality education for their children.

While commending parents for still sending their kids to school despite the hard times in the country, the Bashorun of Pamo Isin, Kwara State, however, admonished them not to relent in order to safeguard the children’s future.

In his recommendations, a retired Vice Principal, Mrs Janet Adamolekun said rather than adding their children to the list of out of school children, parents should enrol their children in public schools.

According to her, “Some people have three children in private schools and they earn average income. This will create problem for the family due to the current economic situation in the country.

“There are very good public schools around that such parent can enroll their children in. This will reduce the costs and also ensure the children remain in school.”
