Driver charged with manslaughter

A 47-year-old driver, Obinna Enye, has been dragged before the Chief Magistrate Court in Ondo town, for causing the death of one Segun Akinyemi, while driving recklessly on the highway.
The police brought Enye before the court on Thursday, for being the driver in charge of a truck marked BLF201XA, which he allegedly drove at a high velocity dangerous to the public.
The defendant was also alleged to have damaged a Toyota Siena Bus with number plate NND87XB valued at N8,700,000, property of one Kunle Ayodeji.
Enye was also alleged to have caused damages to a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with number plate 836 QD, valued at N700,000, property of one Segun Akinyele and also damaged a security gate valued at N300,000, property of GRE Estate.
He was said to have committed the offence on January 12, 2024, contrary to and punishable under Section 18 of the Road Traffic Law Cap 136 Volume 3 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The police prosecutor, Supol Bernard Olagbayi, asked the court for time to study the case file.
Lawyers for the defendant, Mrs Stella Arochendo and Jessica Achilike, applied for the bail of the defendant in the most liberal terms.
The Magistrate, Mrs Charity Adeyanju, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with one surety in like sum.
Adeyanju adjourned the case till March 4, 2024, for hearing.
