From Michael Ofulue, Osogbo
For allegedly driving recklessly and causing the death of a 60-year pedestrian, Gabriel Adeeyo., a driver, Wasiu Kazeem has been dragged before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court, Osun State.
Thirty-year-old Kazeem, a commercial driver of one Mitsubishi bus with number plate RLG 799 XA was said to have driven dangerously on the highway which resulted to the death of the sexagenarian.
The defendant was also accused of driving on the highway without driver’s licence, insurance and road worthiness. He was said to have hit the victim who was walking along the road at night.
The police prosecutor, Jacob Akintunde said the defendant committed the offence on February 19, 2022 at about 8:30pm at Onward Junction, Osogbo.
But the accused person pleaded not guilty to the six-count charge of dangerous driving and manslaughter.
The defense counsel, Kehinde Adepoju prayed the court to admit him to bail on a liberal term, promising that he would provide a reliable surety and would not jump bail.
However, the prosecutor opposed the bail application and argued that the offence involved loss of life, stressing that the defendant would evade trial if granted bail.
The presiding Magistrate, O. A. Daramola ordered the defence to furnish the court with written bail application.
Daramola ordered that the defendant be remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre and adjourned the matter till April 4, 2022 for ruling on formal bail application.
