Driver, two others docked for stealing boss’ cars

Okada riders held over theft

A 43-year-old driver, Olaleye Oladele,  his friend, Bisi Oyekanmi, 67, and one Akeem Abdulrasaq,50, have been arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court over alleged theft and receipt of a stolen car.

The trio allegedly committed the offences on October 22, 2021 at Halleluyah Estate in Osogbo.

Oladele, an employee of one Folarin Olabisi, who is based in Germany, was accused of conniving with his friend, Oyekanmi, to steal two of his boss’s vehicles.

The stolen vehicles are an Infinity jeep with number plate WWD-696-AA and a Chrysler with number plate GNN-609-AG.

The Infinity jeep was said to have been sold to one Abdulrasaq after forging its document, while the accused allegedly converted the Chrysler to his own use as the owner was away in Germany.

Oladele, in the process, was said to have had an accident with the car and thereby damaged it.

The police prosecutor,  Kayode Adeoye, told the court that the crashed Chrysler car had been recovered while the Infinity jeep was not released by the buyer.

He said Abdulrasaq received the Infinity jeep with  number plate WWD-696-AA, which he knew was a stolen vehicle.

The accused person pleaded not guilty to the offences which  contravene Sections 516 and 383 and were punishable under Sections 390(8)(b)(10A) and 427 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State.

The defence counsel, Najite Okobe, applied for their bail, saying the constitution presumed them to be innocent until proven contrary.

In his ruling, Magistrate M.A. Olatunji granted them bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties each in the same amount and adjourned till January 20, 2022 for hearing.

However, the accused persons were remanded at the Ilesa Correctional Centre as they could not perfect their bail conditions.

In a related incident, two men; Godwin Moonyele and Thank God Okoye were on Monday arraigned before an Oke-Eda Magistrates’ Court Akure for allegedly stealing one Nissan Bus and a cash valued at N420,000.

Godwin, 52 and Thank God, 42, who are commercial motorcycle operators known as Okada riders are facing a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing.

The prosecutor, Inspector Akintimehin Nelson, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on 15 January, 2022 at about 5:30pm at Adegbola Street Akure.

Nelson said defendants conspired to steal one Nissan Bus with Registration Number AGL539XL valued at five million naira by blocking the owner, one Fagbamila Joel with a motorcycle.

The prosecutor also said that the defendants, while struggling the key of the car with the owner, stole the sum of N420,000 kept inside the bus.

According to him, the offences are contrary and punishable under Sections 516A(1) , 385, 390(9)  of the Criminal Code Cap. 37, Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State 2016. But they pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate, Musa Al-Yunnus granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 with one responsible surety each in like sum.

He adjourned the matter till February, 2018 for hearing.
