Drumming is my life —Kazeem

Talking drum is widely considered as one of the oldest musical instruments in West Africa, it was mainly used by West African griots, which still exists today as storytellers, preserving the oral tradition and history of their villages and families.

Kazeem Lawal who has been drumming professionally for 19 years said that he inherited the job from his father and it has been part of him, saying he love doing the job.

Lawal, explained in an interview with Friday Extravaganza how he was motivated by his father to beat talking drums.

According to him, “drumming is my source of  income through which I have been taking care of my  family.”

He said talking, drum business has taken him so far, and enabled him to sit and dine with kings.

He noted that druming is part of improving the Yoruba culture, saying that people from the Western world have been coming from their country to learn the job from Africans.

Lawal noted that the love and the passion he has for the job made him to do exploits in all his endeavours.

The drummer said he sees himself going higher on the job as a great drummer in Nigeria.

The graduate of Civil Engineering from Osun State Polytechnic, Ire, said he has been drumming since  he was in the primary school.

He identified the disposition of the people towards the profession as one of the challenges he has been encountering.
