A veteran journalist and don, Dayo Duyile has enjoined the government and media owners to set up a Press Fund for journalists to cater for their retirement.
Duyile gave the advice in Akure at a lecture delivered by the veteran Journalists during their annual get together.
He said the trust fund when established would ensure that journalists live comfortable life after disengaging from active journalism practice.
Also, Duyile called on journalists to venture into book publications as it is done by their foreign counterparts to secure their future welfare and families.
According to the veteran, journalists have a lot of sensitive and memorable materials to write about and urged them to team up where necessary to write books that could earn them respectable incomes.
On ownership influence in the media, Duyile, a former General Manager of the Sketch Newspaper, described it as real and pervasive, but warned journalists against sycophancy, which would serve as a death knell for the media outfit.
He described journalism as a profession with power, influence and integrity, asking the practitioners to maintain the virtue while in service. Journalism, he stated is for service to humanity and not a platform for money making.
In his welcome address, the State League Chairman, Asiwaju Banji Kuroloja said the get- together was to celebrate members of the league who in their active practice have sacrificed to promote development and unity in the country.
Kuroloja, a former Editor of Nigeria Tribune appealed to media practitioners to refrain from anything that could bring the profession into disrepute.
Present at the event were the state NUJ Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite and media chiefs.
