Educationist tasks parents on wards’  career choice-

An educationist, Mrs Victoria Gbadegesin has identified the act of choosing careers for children as the major cause of poor performance of some students in schools in Nigeria .

Gbadegesin who made the assertion in a chat  with The Hope charged parents and guardians not to decide career for their children and wards, but allow them to follow their mind so as to fulfil their God-given potentials.

The educationist  who  is the Head of Department (HOD)  Commercial in a private  Secondary School in Akure, noted that “though it is good for parents to choose career for their children, but a particular course or choice of career must not be made a do -or -die affair”.

She maintained that parents need to consider the interest and ability of these children about the course been selected for them, adding  that their  interests must not be set aside .

Her words: “From our observations, we  discovered that most students found it difficult to perform excellently whenever a department is being imposed on them. Therefore, whenever a student prefers  a course or a particular department, we need to give  him or her support and not discouragement. These children need our support to succeed in life.

“Most parents always discourage their children from courses, especially when it comes to other departments other than sciences” .

Mrs Gbadegesin posited that parents need to change their orientation in terms of choosing careers for their children saying that  they should  consider  the future of these children and the country

“Do not let it be medicine and law always, if we are to move the country to the next level, parents and guardians should take  other courses into consideration, Each course has its own advantage and purposes for the advanceent of the nation”, she emphasised.
