Effective online teaching, solution to distortion in education

By  Kehinde Oluwatayo

A suggestion has gone to the government of Nigeria to do everything possible to make online teaching effective as the only alternative to face to face teaching.
According to experts, effective online teaching will provide a lasting solution to distortion in education whenever there is crisis or restriction in movement in the country.
Speaking with The Hope in an interview, Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Comrade Tajudeen Balogun said the only serious alternative to face to face learning is online teaching if all students must be captured at a time.
Balogun who said a lot needs to be done to make online teaching effective suggested that government can make WIFI available in various locations so that all the students can have access to teaching online.
“If WIFI can be made available in various locations in the country, students will not have to buy data and the question of some students can not afford data will be out of it”
According to him, power should be made available by parents either by fueling their generator or making solar power available since government is not forthcoming to ensure that there is adequate power supply.
He added that radio and television should be powered so that the students can watch or listen to the teaching.
While noting that students’ consultation in online teaching is not as high as that of face to face teaching, Balogun said it is still the only serious alternative to the former.
The state Chairman of Parent Teachers Association, Alhaji Abimbola Omoloja advised government to understudy the way online teaching is done in developed countries so that it can be done effectively in Nigeria.
“Although online teaching is not as effective as face to face teaching, it is still commendable. After all, we did not know that online teaching could be possible before until the outbreak of Coronavirus which necessitated it.
“But we need to understudy developed countries so that it will be effective and there will be no distortion in our education”, he stressed.
He commended the state government for its proactive step to close schools again before the protest escalated.
