Effects of tramadolon Nigerian youths

A young man was brought to a Primary Health Center at Oba-Ile due to excessive use of Tramadol.

 He was brought in unconscious. Upon inquiries, it was discovered that he was a regular patient and although he had been warned severally by the doctors to quit the usage of the drug because of his failing health, he has refused to listen.

This was because he took the drug to improve on his sexual prowess and also to relieve him of his worries anytime he was upset or sad.

 So many youths have become victims of drug abuse by using them  without a proper prescription from a doctor.

The case of the young man is a pointer to several cases of tramadol abuse observed among Nigerian youth of today. Hardly can one go to any gathering or event organized by young people without seeing traces of tramadol, Usually referred to as trans in drink.

According to Google, tramadol, sold under the brand Ultram among others, is an opioid pain medication and a serotonin _norepinephine reuptake inhibitor used to treat moderately severe pain. when taken orally in an immediate-release formulation, the onset of pain relief usually begins within an hour.

The National Center For Biotechnology Information in a study, recorded that 77.6 percent of respondents abuse tramadol while 83.9percent of the participants with a history of any substance abuse were five times more likely to abuse tramadol.

In addition, the use of nonopioid prescription drugs for post-traumatic pain management Reduced the risk of Tramadol Abuse.

 Olabadejo Oluwakehinde, a student of the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti, stated his reasons for taking tramadol.

” I normally mix tramadol with my soft drink to sleep after being stressed out with school activities. It also makes me get so high that I forget all my worries and problems for the time being. I can’t do without taking it three times in a week,” he said.

Toluwanimi Wilson, a young bricklayer said he uses tramadol to ease his pains after a tough and rough day at work.

  ” The work I do has to do with lifting, going up and down. It is very strenuous and it drains all my energy. Each time I am done from work, I am always so tired and restless. Therefore,  tramadol helps reduce the pain in preparation for the next day’s work;  “he said.

Also, Adebayo Oluwatosin said the main reason he uses tramadol is  to improve one his sexual prowess.

“I suffer from premature ejaculation which my girlfriend always complain of any time we  have sex. I told one of my friends about it and he recommended tramadol for which I use anytime I want to have sex I have been able to satisfy her sexual urge in bed and improve in our sex life.

Yusuf Abdullahi, a motorcyclist said that he takes tramadol because he finds it difficult to sleep. He explained that he takes solace in taking tramadol because it makes him sleep better than before.

Several medical experts have shared their opinions on how a person suffering from tramadol addiction can be free.

Mrs Adeniran Folashade, a senior nurse and a matron at a primary health care center in Akure,  stated that there is a way to be free from tramadol addiction.

“A person who is addicted to the use of tramadol and is seeking help should endeavour to book an appointment with a doctor.

“Your doctor can assess your overall health by performing a physical examination. He can also discuss your options for treatment, and if needed initiation of detoxification procedures should be carried out.” She said.

Also, Mr Afolabi Micheal, A pharmacist said medication is also one of the ways to treat Tramadol addiction/dependence.

“Maintenance medications such as methadone may be considered to ease withdrawal symptoms. There are other maintenance medications including buprenorphine, naloxone, and naltrexone prevent tramadol from activating opioid receptors,” he said.

 Mrs Aderotimi Adekemi, a medical doctor stated that there are different measures a person addicted to tramadol should undertake such as avoiding people and places that make him think about using the drug again, finding fulfilling work or other activities to get involved in, staying active, eating a balanced diet getting regular sleep, putting your health first, especially your mental health, building a positive self-image and making plans for the future.

Also, Miss Fasoranti Ifemide, a  psychologist has recommended therapy for addicts. She said that there are different types of therapy.

“Cognitive behavioral therapy(CBT) can help you identify and change negative behavior and attitude.

“You will also learn how to cope with the frequent cravings and avoid triggering situations and reduce your risk of relapse,” she said.

 The effects of tramadol can be both physical and psychological.

Physically, tramadol can cause drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and dizziness, and it can lead to physical dependence addiction.

Psychologically, tramadol can cause mood swings, anxiety, and depression.

When a person is physically dependent on tramadol, they will experience withdrawal symptoms by the time they stop taking it abruptly.

One of the dangers of tramadol is the risk of overdose; an overdose in the sense of taking a lethal amount of the drug. Tramadol can be deadly and the overdose risk is even higher when it is combined with other substances such as alcohol.

There are several withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, sweating, and diarrhea. the severity of the withdrawal symptoms can vary depending on how constantly the person takes the drug .

 Tramadol is a strong pain killer from a group of medicines called opiates and narcotics. It is used to treat moderately severe pain. For example, after an operation or a serious injury you can make use of Tramadol.

 Also, it can only be used when other forms of non-opioid relief have not been successful in managing pain or are not tolerated. It is usually recommended for the treatment of chronic pain.

The main function that tramadol performs is to modulate the descending pain pathways within the central nervous system through the binding of parent and M1 metabolic opioid receptors, and the weal inhibitions of uptake norepinephrine and serotonin.
