Ekiti electricity board to oversee sale of 3,000 prepaid meters

The Ekiti State Electricity Regulatory Bureau will oversee the sale and installation of 3,000 prepaid meters for interested electricity consumers in Ado-Ekiti. The initiative, led by a recently licensed Meter Asset Provider (MAP), will commence in the first week of February 2025.
State Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, announced the initiative in Ado-Ekiti, emphasizing that it is part of the government’s efforts to eliminate estimated billing and inaccurate electricity charges.
He stated that the initiative aims to provide consumers with fair and transparent electricity billing, ensuring they pay only for the power they use.
Aluko noted that similar efforts were recently implemented in communities such as Ijero, Ode, Aisegba, Erinmope, and Ipole-Iloro Ekiti, where bulk metering was replaced with individual prepaid meters.
In these areas, approximately 1,104 prepaid meters were sold and installed for households and businesses.
He further highlighted that the use of prepaid meters will help consumers manage energy consumption efficiently, reducing waste and easing pressure on the electricity distribution grid.
Additionally, customers will have access to detailed insights into their energy usage.
Aluko commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji for supporting electricity sector reforms, positioning Ekiti State as a leader in the push for energy independence in Nigeria.
Speaking on the initiative, the Executive Secretary of the Ekiti State Electricity Regulatory Bureau, Engr. David Samson, stated that licensed MAPs have made prepaid meters available at affordable rates for residents across the state.
He confirmed that customers in Ado-Ekiti can now purchase their meters, with sales beginning on Monday, February 3, 2025, at the bureau’s office.
He urged the public to take advantage of the opportunity to secure their prepaid meters, assuring them of the bureau’s commitment to coordinating the sale and distribution process efficiently across Ekiti State.
