Members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ Ekiti State chapter have called on relevant stakeholders to ensure that anyone found culpable of Gender Based Violence (GBV) receives adequate penalty to serve as deterrent to others.
The Ekiti State Women Journalists made the call in a statement in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday by its Chairperson and Secretary, Comrades Fatima Bello and Adewumi Ademiju, respectively to commemorate the 2022 International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women and the 16 Days of Activism of Non Violence Against Women and Girls with the theme “ Unite Activism to end Violence Against Women and Girls.”
Concerned authorities were equally enjoined not to condone any act of sweeping cases of GBV under the carpet by using what they called undue influence.
They posited that subverting law in GBV related cases has been one of the main reasons affecting gender advocacy, thereby subduing the efforts of the advocates.
The association decried the agony and setback which various forms of gender violence have caused the society and called on the stakeholders to join hands together in fighting against the scourge.
“Therefore it becomes necessary and crucial that any perpetrator of the heinous act called Gender Based Violence GBV irrespective of who such person is should be made to face the wrath of the law to show seriousness in the efforts being put forward by stakeholders in eliminating the menace.”
NAWOJ commended the wife of the state Governor, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji on swift commencement of activities targeted at nipping the act in the bud to liberate women ,girl child and children at large from all forms of violence for a better living.
